Is Upromise a secure site?

Upromise has implemented security systems designed to keep your information safe:

  • Any page that requires you to log in to gain access is secure-this includes your Upromise account that contains your personally identifiable information.
  • If you leave the Upromise site by clicking on any links provided, Upromise is no longer responsible for your security.
  • Certain areas of our site that are available to the general public are not secure-because no personal information is being stored. For instance, the How It Works pages do not require any exchange of information, so there are no security risks on these pages.
  • For more information on security, please read our Security Statement.

Do I need special software to participate in Upromise?

No special software is required to participate in Upromise. All you need is an Internet connection and a browser that supports 128-bit encryption and cookies.

What is 128-bit encryption?

To enroll in Upromise or to log in to your Upromise account, you must use a web browser that supports 128-bit SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption. SSL is a method of securing data transmitted over the Internet. 128-bit SSL is the industry standard for financial transactions and is the highest-level of encryption generally available today.

How do I tell if my browser supports 128-bit encryption?

128-bit encryption is a standard feature of most current browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+. To check the level of encryption supported by your browser, please follow the steps below:

For Microsoft Internet Explorer:

  1. Open your browser window.
  2. Click on the "Help" menu at the top of the browser window.
  3. Select the menu choice "About Internet Explorer".
  4. A window will appear with information about the version of Internet Explorer that you are using. In this window you will see the label "Cipher Strength". Next to this label it will say "128-bit" if your browser supports 128-bit encryption.

For more information about 128-bit encryption for Microsoft Internet Explorer visit the Microsoft website.

If your browser does not support 128-bit encryption, you will need to upgrade your browser to access the Upromise website. To update your browser, please follow the links provided above.

From which browsers can I access the Upromise site?

You can access the Upromise site from all the most popular browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox. To access the secure areas of the Upromise website, your browser must support 128-bit encryption.

  • FF 3.x

What are the Upromise website's system requirements?

Browser requirements:
The Upromise service is designed for use with most common browsers. Supported browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.x or later, Firefox 3.x or later running on Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista or Macintosh OS X platforms.

Internet access:
You must have access to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider to use the Upromise service. If you are having problems accessing portions of Upromise, please contact your Internet Service Provider or corporate network administrator.

Internet Access - Technical Information for Network Administrators:
The Upromise service works via direct browser access or through proxy servers. Your browsers or proxy servers must be configured to allow both secure (HTTPS port 443) and insecure (HTTP port 80) access to the Upromise service.

How can I tell if I'm in a secure area?

There are several ways to confirm that you are in a secure area.

  • All SSL-capable (Secure Sockets Layer) browsers have a symbol to indicate when you are in a secure area of a site. For example:
Browser Location Non-Secure Area (Normal) Secure Area
Microsoft Internet Explorer Lower Right NONE Closed Lock
  • Another way to identify a secure area is by looking at the URL. If the first piece of code (before the colon) says "http"- you are not in a secure place. If it says "https" you will know you're in a secure area.

Can I use MSN TV/Web TV to access the Upromise website?

You may be able to access our website with MSN TV/Web TV, however, it is not a browser that Upromise officially supports. If you experience problems on our website when using MSN TV/Web TV, we may not be able to assist you.

I recently upgraded to IE7 and I receive a security warning when I try to download the Upromise TurboSaver. What should I do?

When installing the Upromise TurboSaver for the first time, you may get a warning from one of a number of software products (firewalls, spyware, IE7, etc.) that asks if you want to allow the software to be installed. The choices presented to the user are often something similar to allow once, never allow, or allow always. We suggest you choose 'allow always' or an equivalent action. Please see your product's Users Guide for further information on this issue.

I upgraded to IE7 and every time I try to access participating Upromise retailers through the Upromise TurboSaver I get a security warning. What should I do?

There are many products designed to limit the accessibility of your computer to outside sites - Firewalls, anti-ad software, spyware programs and more. The Upromise TurboSaver's purpose is to check the site you are visiting against our list of participating merchant sites in order to help you access available savings even if you forget to start your shopping at upromise.com. You may need to add upromise.com to your software's exceptions list. Please see your product's Users guide for further information on how to do this.

The Upromise TurboSaver does not appear on my browser, what should I do?

There are a couple of reasons you may not be seeing the toolbar with TurboSaver. If you are in Hidden Mode you will not see a toolbar. To switch to full mode and see the toolbar, click on the Upromise icon (at the top or very bottom of your screen) and choose to "Switch to Full Mode". For information about Full and Hidden Modes (and switching in-between) visit http://www.upromise.com/member/turbosaver/modes.do.

If you still do not see a toolbar and are in Full Mode, you may need to alter a configuration under Internet Explorer and Firefox that allows you to view the Upromise TurboSaver on your browser.

To do this, try one or all of the following:

For Internet Explorer:

  • On the top menu of the browser, click on "View". Choose "Toolbars" and make sure that "Upromise IE TurboSaver" is checked. If it is checked, try un-checking it then see if the Toolbar appears.
  • On the top menu of the browser, click on "View". Choose "Toolbars" and uncheck "Lock the Toolbars". This allows you to now select the dividers in the browser between various toolbars, and resize the entire toolbar vertically to make the toolbar selections appear. You can then arrange them as desired.

For Firefox:

  • Choose "Toolbars" from the View menu. This will open a list of toolbars installed on your system. Make sure that "Upromise TurboSaver for Firefox" is checked.

Note that resizing the entire browser window allows you to see all TurboSaver options and rearrange them as you want.

If this doesn't work, then let's make sure you have enabled third-party browser extensions.

  • On the top menu of the browser, click on "Tools". Choose "Internet Options" & select Advanced. Please make sure that "Enable third-party browser extensions*" option is checked as shown in the picture below.

If the box isn't checked then check the box & restart the Internet Explorer.

  • Next, check to see if it's been added to the toolbars visible.

On the top menu of the browser, click on "View". Choose "Toolbars" & check status of "Upromise IE TurboSaver". If there is a check next to "Lock the toolbars" you will need to select that first to uncheck it, then you'll be able to choose the Upromise IE TurboSaver.

If the Upromise IE TurboSaver is there but grayed out, you can enable it by visiting "Manage Add-ons" under "Tools", as shown in the pictures below. Click on all of the Upromise IE TurboSaver instances (one by one if necessary) and then you will be able to select "Enable". Click OK & you will start seeing the Upromise toolbar on your browser.

If there is more than one Upromise member using the same computer, can we use multiple Upromise TurboSavers on one computer?

It depends. The TurboSaver was not built to support multiple users on the same web browser. However, if you use two different web browsers on your computer (i.e., if you use Internet Explorer and your husband uses Mozilla Firefox) then you could each install TurboSaver on your preferred browser. That said, as long as the two of you are using the same Upromise account, you only need one TurboSaver associated with that account.

Is Upromise TurboSaver compatible with the Google Toolbar?

The Upromise TurboSaver can easily be used in conjunction with the Google toolbar. We have not had any reports of a performance drop from using both toolbars together. Do keep in mind, however, that you can search Google with the Upromise TurboSaver in Full Mode and may not need both.

My system is asking me to allow an Automatic Update of the Upromise TurboSaver. What should I do?
